Build Introduction
The Charged Bolts Sorcerer leveling build unleashes a barrage of lightning with a straightforward playstyle that anyone can enjoy.
Charged Bolts fire a barrage of projectiles that shotgun individual targets with multiple hits, while always piercing through to deal damage to every enemy in their path. This is the best starter build to level a new Sorcerer character due to its devastating damage output and effective clearing against groups of enemies.
The
Burn Through modifier for
Charged Bolts, unlocked at Level 32, is recommended to significantly boost damage output in the Fire build variant. Alternatively, you can continue to follow the Lightning version of the build to reach Level 70.
Check the Sorcerer Leveling Guide Overview for a comparison of all the starter builds on Icy Veins.
Once your Sorcerer character reaches Level 70, switch to the Endgame Guide for the Charged Bolts Sorcerer to continue this build.

Skill Bar and Skill Tree Points
The Skill Tree above shows the order in which to allocate your Skill Points in the Leveling Path. Leveling up grants 69 points. An extra 14 points are gained from completing Renown for Eternal Players and Seasonal Ranks for Seasonal Players. Allocate the extra points to gain additional Ranks to priority Skills faster, such as
Charged Bolts.
When you reach Level 32, respec to the Fire version of the Charged Bolts Sorcerer shown in the section below.
Burn Through deals significantly more damage than the Lightning setup. The Endgame Guide for the Charged Bolts Sorcerer switches back to
Surging Charge when
Ferocious Aspect is obtained. If you do not want to respec or cannot due to not owning the Lord of Hatred expansion, the Lightning build variant above can be followed to Level 70.
Fire Charged Bolts Optional Respec
The Fire Charged Bolts Sorcerer switches to
Firework,
Burn Through, and
Inferno from the starting Lightning version of the build. Do not attempt to follow the Leveling Path for the Fire setup until you reach Level 32.
If you are unsure about the usage of these Skills, read the Build Mechanics Section after setting up your Skill Bar.

Sorcerer Class Mechanic — Enchantments
The Sorcerer’s Specialization can be unlocked at Level 15. Complete the Legacy of the Magi questline as soon as possible to gain access to your first Enchantment Slot, and then assign
Ice Armor to it. Consume your Potion to activate Ice Armor without a Cooldown for a Barrier, and more importantly, gain increased Mana Regeneration from its modifier.
When you unlock the second Enchantment Slot at Level 30, assign
Frost Nova to automatically trigger it, applying Vulnerable to enemies and generating Mana through its modifiers.
Gear, Stats, Gems, and Runes
The following sections cover the important systems that are essential to improving the power of your character during the leveling process. Higher Item Power generally indicates stronger gear, but you should also consider the affixes and effects that are relevant to your class and build.
Legendary Aspects
Legendary Aspects can be found on Legendary Items, which can be salvaged at the Blacksmith to unlock them in the Codex of Power for repeated imprinting onto your gear. Higher ranks for aspects are unlocked by salvaging Legendary Items with higher aspect values. Check the Aspect and Codex of Power guide for more general information.
Listed below are all the Aspects found on Legendary Items that are important for the Charged Bolts Sorcerer leveling build. They are listed in order of priority, with the most beneficial at the top. For the best results, combine these Aspects with the ideal Stat Priorities. The best-in-slot Aspects list is in the Endgame Guide for the Charged Bolts Sorcerer.

Stat Priority and Tempering Affixes
Listed below are the affixes to prioritize on gear for Charged Bolts Sorcerers during the early leveling process, ranked by importance. Affixes on the same line have equal value, so attempt to obtain all affixes in each line before moving on to the next.
Ensure you temper your best item upgrades regularly, as the extra affixes provide a significant advantage while leveling. Weapon and Offensive category tempers are especially powerful and can massively boost your damage output.
When comparing weapons with similar item levels, Two-Handed Staves are preferred over a One-Handed Weapon and Focus setup for higher damage per hit, double Aspect effect, and easier upgrading while leveling.
The most beneficial tempering affixes while leveling are included below. The best-in-slot tempering affixes are available in the Endgame Guide for the Charged Bolts Sorcerer. Check the Tempering Guide for more information on this system.
If you are using
Burn Through, prioritize Fire and Pyromancy stats instead of Lightning and Shock in the list.

Build Mechanics
The Charged Bolts Sorcerer leveling build is relatively simple to play due to the Core Skill doing the majority of the damage for both density clearing and single-target fights. Every projectile bolt from a cast can hit an individual enemy simultaneously to shotgun them, and they always pierce through to hit all enemies in its path.
Charged Bolts fires a base amount of 6 projectiles per cast with its modifiers, along with an additional bolt for every stack of Ferocity from
Surging Charge. The default Maximum Ferocity count starts at 4, enabling a total of 10 bolts fired per cast.
Arc Lash generates Mana and Ferocity through its modifiers. This Basic Skill is necessary to get started with the build, but fewer casts are needed as other sources of Mana Regeneration and Ferocity stacks become available.
Ice Armor grants a Barrier and, more importantly, generates Mana with the Resource Regeneration modifier. The Skill can be cast from the Skill Bar or activated by consuming a Potion through its Enchantment Effect.
Frost Nova generates Mana and applies Vulnerable to enemies through its modifiers. The Skill can be cast from the Skill Bar or triggered through its Enchantment Effect, which activates often due to the barrage of projectiles fired from
Charged Bolts with decent Lucky Hit Chance.
Teleport is an effective Mobility Skill, especially with its Movement Speed and
Wormhole modifiers. The Ferocity modifier grants 2 stacks of Ferocity to fire additional bolts, reducing the casts of
Arc Lash needed to fully stack Ferocity.
Unstable Currents increases damage output and Maximum Ferocity stacks (2) with its modifier.
Ball Lightning is automatically triggered while Unstable Currents is active to grant Ferocity stacks and pull enemies together through
Implosion, while bypassing its added Cooldown.
For the Fire setup,
Burn Through is allocated to deal higher damage per hit with explosions on impact.
Inferno pulls enemies together to deal area damage to the entire group.
Rotation and Playstyle
Use the following rotation to optimize the playstyle.
- Cast
Teleport to traverse and/or hit an enemy with it to gain 2 Ferocity stacks. - Lighting setup: Against tough elites and bosses, activate
Unstable Currents to increase damage output, increase Maximum Ferocity by 2, and trigger
Ball Lightning. - Fire setup: Cast
Inferno to group enemies up. - Cast
Frost Nova to Freeze enemies and apply Vulnerable, if it is not already triggered by its Enchantment Effect. - Spam
Charged Bolts to deal damage. Stand close to elites and bosses to shotgun them for full damage output. - Cast
Ice Armor from the Skill Bar or activate its Enchantment Effect by consuming a Potion to gain a Barrier and increase Mana Regeneration. - Generate additional Mana and Ferocity stacks with
Arc Lash when needed.
